Tuesday, August 12th, 2008: another Giant Swallowtail sighting on the north shore of Lake Stoco at approximately 12:00 noon. Alas, no photo this time. These insects are very active ... too fast for an old guy..
I also received a photo of a Giant Swallowtail from my youngest sib. She saw the butterfly on Sunday, August 10th, 2008, a couple of miles west of Thomasburg..
The first two images are of a male Eastern Pondhawk (Erythemis simplicicollis), a.k.a. Common Pondhawk or Green Clearwing. The males are covered in a whitish bloom and look quite different from the females.
