Male Dobsonfly (Corydalus cornutus)

It is a "he" ... only the males have the long mandibles for grasping the females during mating. They are harmless to handle and can't really bite hard since the mouth parts are too long to exert much leverage, it feels like a pinch.

A couple of the images showing the dobsonfly sitting on my hand to give an idea of the actual size of this impressive insect. These photos were taken on July the 11th, 2008 at 8:00 pm.
